A Father’s Affirmation

“A Father’s Affirmation” is an award winning Branded Content Film inspired by athletes Angel Reese and Sha'carri Richardson. This story speaks to the importance of black girls showing up as themselves and taking up space no matter if they are an athlete or a mathlete.

PROJECT BRIEF

My good friends at a Grits On Sunday (small creative agency in Richmond, VA) reached out for my assistance in leading the art direction and graphic design for their latest short film.

When tasked with this project, we wanted to find the best way to tell the stories of the athletes that have inspired generations of young black girls to never be afraid to do the most. Thus, we came up with the slogan, “Most Extra.” This tagline would serve as the core of my design process.

The film went on to win multiple awards from The One Club, Richmond Ad Awards, and the Afrikana Film Festival. Here is the main poster that I designed.

MY CREATIVE INSPIRATION

As I embarked on this project, I wanted to start my research in the world of sports graphic design. I believe it is extremely important to understand the current design trends in your field of focus. So, I began combing through source material.

Once the research phase was complete, the team and I held multiple brain storming sessions where I ran them through my ideas and direction. After nailing down a base, I wanted to leverage the yellow and blue color scheme throughout the designs for consistency. With an established foundation, we began executing.

It’s a shoutout to Serena, honoring her athletic achievements and her contributions to the self esteem of little girls around the world.
